Devo 2.0 (also known as DEV2.O) is a quintet, created for Walt Disney Records (with the participation of Devo), of multitalented child performers[1] who sing, dance, and play instruments[2] (and mime playing in their music videos and photo shoots) along to songs re-recorded by some of the original members of Devo. Jerry directed all nine of the DEV2.O videos.

A DVD and CD combo was released March 14, 2006.[3] In the summer of 2006 the band began playing their instruments live, in a limited series of performances,[4][5][6] and also contributed a non-album track, "Monkey's Uncle",[7] to a compilation of re-recorded Disney songs called Disneymania, Volume 4.

Altered lyrics[]

The lyrics to some of the songs they perform have been edited to make them more "family friendly" and remove much of the innuendo and irony typical of Devo songs.

In "Through Being Cool", for instance, the line "Eliminate the ninnies and the twits" is changed to "Eliminate the time you waste in cliques", and the innuendo-filled "Girl U Want" is re-written as "Boy U Want"[8] (although the video version of "Girl U Want" keeps nearly all of the original lyrics intact).

The song "Beautiful World" remains mostly unchanged until the end, where the words, "It's a beautiful world for you/It's not for me" have been changed to, "It's a beautiful world for you/I guess me too".

In "Big Mess" the line "I'm a boy with a gun" became "I'm a girl havin' fun".

The theme of "Uncontrollable Urge" changed to craving snack foods,[9] and "Jerkin' Back 'N Forth", a techno dirge including a double-entendre, is now a perky song about dancing.

Disney approved some songs with fewer altered lyrics. "Whip It" changes "give the past 'the slip'" to "give the past a slip" and "you will never ‘live it down’" is contracted to "you’ll never ‘live it down’."

"They thought 'Uncontrollable Urge' was sexual," Mothersbaugh says. "I thought it was about fulfilling your dreams because you were inspired to change the world. They changed the lyrics to make the kids sound like they're having a snack attack, but if the kids listen to DEV2.0 they may eventually seek out Devo albums and wonder why the lyrics were changed." - Mark (2006)
